Vinayak Damodar Savarkar popularly known as Veer Savarkar stands for Indian nationalism. Still, the life and actions of this man are subjects of controversy. Savarkar is one of those freedom fighters whose ideas and ideologies are still subject to controversy. Was he a brave freedom fighter or an advocate of the idea of a split society? Nevertheless, ZEE5 is all set to unravel this multifaceted personality by airing a docuseries titled ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ on May 28.

The announcement coincides with the release of a new trailer, raising the question: Do We know His Story

Unpacking the Layers: Social Activism, Incarceration and Changing Worldviews

Savarkar remains one of the most enigmatic figures of Hindu nationalism; his life was full of activism, imprisonment, and political plotting. He was very antagonistic to British rule and was for fighting the rulers. He is credited for founding the Abhinav Bharat, a revolutionary organisation aimed at helping India gain independence. Through his speeches and writings, he was able to rouse many freedom fighters. But the later part of his life pegged on his political views which some people considered to be radical.

The forthcoming ZEE5 docuseries has further teased its “Unheard” narrative of Veer Savarkar. Will it delve into unknown corners of his life and what led him to do the things he did, or his role in the fight for freedom?

It will probably be a strategic event to focus on the time Savarkar spent as a prisoner in the Cellular Jail in Andaman. Those years were probably the most important ones in the formation of his ideology. It also has the potential to discuss his purported involvement in assisting the British Raj during World War II.

A Legacy of Patriotism and Division: Start Discussions, Bold Thoughts

In the eyes of many Indians, Savarkar continued and remains an epitome of patriotism to the nation. His idea of ‘Hindutva’ – the desire for a distinct Hindu nation for India – is still popular with some pockets of society. However, others deny this ideology arguing that it is prejudice.

This biography has the potential of provoking discourses regarding this complex figure, “Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. ”Thus, the presence of both pros and cons allows the audiences who are aware of the historical context to make their own conclusions regarding Savarkar.

This new project is on the heels of a biographical film on Savarkar made recently that has again generated the public’s curiosity about this mysterious man.
