We want to take you on a once-in-a-lifetime experience in honour of Bollywood’s lovable and incredibly talented late actor, Mr. Shashi Kapoor, who would have turned 84 this year. One of Bollywood’s most renowned performers is none other than Balbir Raj Kapoor, who went on to become recognized by his stage name Shashi Kapoor. Born the third son of the Kapoor family on March 18, 1938, in the state of Kolkata, to Prithviraj Kapoor and his spouse. In 1948, he made his film debut as a child actor in “Aag,” directed by his older brother.

Shashi Kapoor entered Bollywood as an adult actor during the height of the industry’s toxic masculinity trend. Male performers in gritty urban cinema portrayed furious young men, farmers, criminals, and wronged men during the 1960s and 1970s. Bollywood roles of that era typically depicted men as strong, hefty, aggressive, and stoic, with their female counterparts serving as their moral center. Queue walks in Shashi Kapoor, with his slender frame, exquisite features, and stunning appearance, causing a shift in Bollywood’s trends. His gentle eyes, full lips, and lush, wavy hair challenged traditional notions of masculinity and redefined leading man roles in Indian cinema.

Typically, he was portrayed as an affluent, reserved man who was morally and ethically upright. Then, the roles were inverted, and his main ladies were depicted as strong, self-reliant women who were chasing him. This shift was a welcome change.

Shashi Kapoor’s attractiveness, acting prowess, and features led to innumerable declarations of love and admiration over the course of his three-decade career. He was similar to the lead male performers in Korean dramas that you all like watching today, but in the 1970s.

Between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s, he collaborated with numerous renowned Bollywood actresses, including Zeenat Aman, Sharmila Tagore, and Raakhee. He played opposite Hema Malini, Parveen Babi, and Moushumi Chatterjee in numerous movies. He played the lead role in several Bollywood classics, including Do Aur Do Paanch, Anjaam, Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978), Aamne Saamne (1967), and New Delhi Times (1985).

With Amitabh Bachchan portraying the characters of gangster, mafia, and the wronged guy, and Shashi Kapoor playing the roles of police officer, mine worker, or businessman’s son, their bromance was adored by the public.

Shashi Kapoor had a very successful career, appearing in over 175 Hindi and English-language motion pictures. Among the many honors he received were two Filmfare Awards and four National Film Awards. In addition, he starred in a number of English-language films, most of which were directed by Merchant Ivory. Because of his varied career, the Indian government has given him awards such as the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2015 and the Padma Bhushan award in 2011.

Among his accolades are the 1965 BFJA Awards for Best Actor, which he received for his performance in the well-known Bollywood movie Jab Jab Phool Khiley. From the 1974 film Deewaar, he was awarded the Filmfare for Best Supporting Actor. He was the recipient of a second Filmfare Award for Kalyug (1981). For his role in the New Delhi Times, he was honored with the 1986 Filmfare Best Actor Award and the BFJA Awards For Best Actor.

And these are only a few highlights of his contributions to Bollywood; in addition, he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, the Padma Bhushan Award in 2011, and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. He passed away sadly in December 2017 at the age of 79 from liver cirrhosis. All of those who loved and adored him still carry his roles and performing in their hearts.
