Anasuya Sengupta does not need any introduction today. She claimed the Best Actress Award in the Un Certain Regard category at the 77th Cannes Film Festival for her powerful portrayal in ‘The Shameless. ’ This achievement for the Indian actress on an international platform is a major victory for Indian cinema
Suspense and acting done right
Konstantin Bojanov is a Bulgarian writer-director and he has done a very commendable job in addressing a raw and realistic theme in ‘The Shameless’. The movie revolves around the life of Renuka portrayed by Sengupta, the protagonist who is a woman who finds herself forced into being a sex worker in a brothel in Delhi. Out of despair and the urge to live free from the vices, Renuka rises to the occasion and decides to flee the brothel, having had to murder a police officer. It then proceeds to show her transition into a cruel and unforgiving society in her desperate attempt to attain a second chance.
Renuka has been depicted by Sengupta in quite a compelling manner that has garnered her a lot of appreciation. Reviewers have particularly noted the subtlety of her acting, where she effectively captured Renuka’s plight, strength and edgy will power successfully. Initial criticisms portray her acting as authentic for the hardship of the character and her desire for a better life than the one the movie portrays.
A World of Indian Movies
Sengupta’s victory in Cannes is not only for him but also a huge milestone on the Indian screen. Un Certain Regard highlights memorable films from the world cinemas, which are characterized by pathos and risk-taking. Thus, merely getting into this prestigious section ‘The Shameless’ itself implies the change in the spectrum of the Indian cinema ready enough to explore the socially sensitive themes.
The victory of Sengupta takes this voice to another level. It highlights the skill and creativity of Indian actors and directors showing they can certainly hold their own in a competitive international market.
