Supreme Court issues notice to NTA on NEET-UG 2024 paper leak, demands answers

Supreme Court NEET-UG 2024 paper leak, NTA challenged, counseling continues, Chief Justice Chandrachud to hear July 8

NEET-UG 2024: A group of students cast doubt on the integrity of the May 5, 2024, NEET-UG 2024 exam in their recent writ challenge, citing claims of paper leaks.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court sent notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the Center over a plea to cancel the NEET-UG 2024 tests due to claims of question paper leaks.

Justices Vikram Nath and Ahsanuddin Amanullah’s bench declared that “we need answers” and that “sanctity has been affected.” The court declined to halt the counseling procedure for exam-clearing candidates, nevertheless.

“Allow the counseling to begin. Senior Advocate Mathews J. Nedumpara requested the court to continue the counseling, but Justice Nath responded, “We are not stopping the counseling.”

“It’s not so simple that because you have done it (conducted the exam), it is sacrosanct,” Justice Amanullah informed the NTA counsel. We require responses to that. There has been an impact on holiness. Thus, we require responses.

The bench further stated that the court would cease the counseling if additional time is required to file the response and that it would post the matter for hearing as soon as the court reopens.

The bench mentioned that Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud’s panel has already taken up the matter and is set to hear it on July 8 and tagged the present petition also for hearing along with the other.

A group of students filed a new writ suit, arguing that the exam paper leaks cast doubt on the integrity of the May 5 exam and asking the court to void it and order NTA to reschedule.

The students added in their petition, “They are completely disturbed after learning about the leak of the NEET exam material. Ever since the NEET exam paper leak became public, the petitioners have been experiencing extreme worry and anxiety. The petitioner’s desire to one day become a doctor was fostered by their family.

A court led by Chief Justice Iyer denied a similar request on May 17 and scheduled a hearing for July 8 in response to the refusal to postpone the announcement of the NEET exam results.

Following the announcement of the NEET-UG 2024 results on June 4, The Indian Express revealed on June 6 that 44 of the top scorers, out of 67, answered a basic Physics question incorrectly but were still given “grace marks” due to a mistake in an earlier edition of the NCERT Class 12 textbook.

Even though the NTA’s interim answer key, which was made public on May 29, chose the right response from the available options, over 13,000 NEET-UG 2004 applicants contested it, citing information from the textbook that suggested a different response.
