Independence Day 2024: August 15 is India’s annual Independence Day celebration. On Thursday, the country will celebrate Swatantrata Diwas or its 78th Independence Day. As we celebrate Independence Day, discover this year’s theme as well as the holiday’s meaning, history, and traditions.

2024’s Independence Day: What’s the theme?

The Indian government has declared that this year’s theme for the country’s 78th Independence Day is Viksit Bharat or Developed India. It represents the government’s vision of an industrialized country by 2047 and India’s commitment to change. India will celebrate its 100th year of independence from colonial domination in 2047.

India’s independence from British colonial rule for over 200 years was celebrated on August 15, 1947, which is known as Independence Day. With the Revolution of 1857, the nation’s fight for independence got underway. Later on, in the year 1920 or so, Mahatma Gandhi led the liberation movement to greater success. The Independence Bill was introduced by the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947. India gained its independence on August 15.

    History and Importance in 2024

Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India, referred to this momentous occasion as a “Tryst with Destiny” on the eve of India’s independence. Nehru raised the flag of the country above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort on August 15. Since then, every prime minister has continued the custom of addressing the nation.

Every American is reminded on Independence Day of the nation’s dawning new beginning, the independence struggle, the freedom warriors who gave their lives in defense of the nation, and the innumerable sacrifices they made to liberate themselves from the grip of the British. The nation observes it as a national holiday.

On Swatantrata Diwas, the Indian Prime Minister raises the national flag and gives a speech to the people each year. The address on Independence Day outlines the country’s successes, growth, and aspirations for the future. With this year’s speech, PM Modi will have given 11 straight Independence Day speeches—the first of his third term.

Parades, cultural events, flag hoisting, and patriotic song-singing are held annually in honor of Independence Day. Children are encouraged to give speeches and poems on independence, honor our liberation soldiers, perform cultural dances throughout the nation, and sing songs during cultural events held in schools and institutions.
