During a six-week run of the one-woman off-Broadway show “Grounded,” Anne Hathaway, known for her role in ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ disclosed that her miscarriage took place.
“In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the Oscar-winning actress and mother-of-two shared, ‘The initial time it didn’t pan out for me. I was immersed in a play where I had to simulate giving birth onstage every night.'”
Hathaway expressed the necessity to be candid with her friends when they visited her backstage after performances, stating, “It became overwhelming to maintain a facade while onstage, so I had to be honest about what was happening.”
Anne Hathaway, renowned for her role in The Devil Wears Prada, welcomed her first son, Jonathan, with husband Adam Shulman in March 2016.

In a July 2019 Instagram announcement of her second pregnancy, Hathaway shared the joyous news. She also subtly referenced her journey with fertility.
“Not for a film,” she captioned, accompanying a snapshot of her pregnant belly. “Jokes aside, to those enduring infertility and the challenges of conception, understand that neither of my pregnancies followed a straightforward path.”
In a recent interview, the actress elaborated on the motivation behind her Instagram post. She stated, “Considering the struggles I experienced while trying to conceive, it wouldn’t have felt genuine to share something purely joyous when I’m aware that the journey is far more complex for many people.”
She further expressed that she refused to feel ashamed of a miscarriage as it is “statistically quite common.”
Hathaway expressed surprise upon discovering that many of her friends had undergone comparable experiences.
“Why do we allow ourselves to feel so needlessly isolated? That’s where the real damage occurs. So, I made the conscious choice to address it,” she explained. “What truly broke my heart, amazed me, and inspired hope in me. It was that for nearly three years after, almost every day, a woman would come up to me in tears, and I would just hold her. She was carrying this pain all by herself, and suddenly, it wasn’t solely hers anymore.”
Hathaway’s decision to share her experience highlights the importance of breaking the silence surrounding infertility and pregnancy struggles. By speaking out, she found solace in herself. She also provided comfort to countless others who felt alone in their journeys. It underscores the power of openness and empathy in fostering connection and support within communities facing similar challenges.
