Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi won a bronze medal in the immensely competitive women’s 55kg category at the IWF World Cup held on Tuesday. She lifted an astonishing 196 kg but could not lift more than 198 kg in total. Her marvelous performance demonstrated that she is unshakable and deserving of her position on the podium. Her performance was magnificent in her previous contest, the CWG this year, where she had a 203kg total. Bindya had three clean-and-jerk efforts and was unable to raise all her six efforts because of a poor clean-and-jerk. At that time, the North Korean competitor, Kang Hyon Gyong won competition. She provided a spectacular 234Kg (103 Kg snatch and 131 Kg in Jerk and Clean)

The medals for the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift are given separately at competitions such as Continental championships, World Cups, and World Championships. Thus, in the non-Olympic weight class, Bindya competed; Cambei Mihaela-Valentina from Romania, with an amazing personal best of 201 Kg, won the silver medal and lifted 91 kg in snatch and 110.00 kg in the clean and jerk. After Mirabai Chanu earned an Olympic qualification by switching to Mihaela-Valentina’s 49kg weight class for the forthcoming Paris Games, Mihaela-Valentina turned to a 59 Kg weight class.
Although, Bindya is now 29th in the 59kg Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) . This was despite her having competed in the 59kg division at the 2022 World Championships and finishing 25th. Unfortunately, she will not be able to qualify for the Olympics. Only the top 10 lifters in each weight class will go to the coveted Paris Games.
