Diljit Dosanjh: Amar Singh Chamkila To have Better Portrayal of Sikh Character

Renowned singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh, known globally, expressed dissatisfaction with Bollywood’s historical portrayal of Sikh actors’ style. Speaking to Anubhav Bassi for Netflix India while promoting his film “Amar Singh Chamkila,” Diljit highlighted his own fashion evolution and emphasized the importance of personal style.

Diljit admitted he’s not passionate about clothes or style, attributing his fashion sense to dissatisfaction with Bollywood’s portrayal of Sikhs. He resolved to outdress Bollywood stylists in his films.

    Global Influence on Punjabi Fashion

Diljit emphasized the global influence on Punjab’s fashion trends, stating that styles from places like New York quickly reach Punjab due to the connection. He aimed to challenge Bollywood’s misrepresentation of people and stressed that fashion isn’t about expensive clothing but about style. While he relaxes at home in shorts, he ensures to dress impeccably when necessary.

During a mid-2020 interview with film critic Anupama Chopra, Diljit confessed, “My only weakness is my lack of proficiency in English.” Despite his honesty, he acknowledges that mastering English could have led to greater success.

Diljit Dosanjh, known for “Udta Punjab” and “Good Newwz,” hesitated to visit Karan Johar’s Dharma office in Mumbai due to a previous offer being rescinded. In a BBC interview, he explained that Dharma didn’t ask him to audition, which he found disappointing after they had given the role to someone else previously.

When Anupama Chopra inquired last year if he wasn’t content with Hindi films, Diljit responded, “Not everything needs to be articulated. The expression on one’s face can convey the entire narrative.

“In the same BBC interview, Diljit discussed the allure of showbiz parties after achieving fame, stating he is a detached person. He emphasized abstaining from addictive substances and shared his morning routine of refreshing himself with Gurbani while showering.

    Initial Skepticism

As a Sikh actor initially, Diljit faced skepticism about being a Sardar in the film industry, especially in Punjabi cinema. However, his success in one Punjabi film led to more offers and changed perceptions. Similarly, when considering a transition to Hindi cinema, he encountered resistance from those he had previously worked with in Punjabi films, but eventually, Bollywood approached him with opportunities.
