A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, on July 12, 2024. Quake occurred at a depth of 10 km, causing concern but no reports of damage.

On Friday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter Scale occurred in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. The National Center for Seismology reports that at 12:26 PM, the area experienced earthquakes.

    Canada’s earthquake

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred earlier on Thursday in Tofino, Canada, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter of this earthquake, which happened at a depth of 8 km, was roughly 130 miles from the small Vancouver Island community of Tofino. The USGS reported that there may have been light shaking for about 2,000 people living in Tofino.

    Time and Repercussions

It was not long after 8 AM local time that the first rumblings in Canada were heard. The earthquake’s magnitude was subsequently reduced from 6.5 to 6.4. Following the incident, the USGS verified that there was no chance of a tsunami.

    Causes Behind Earthquakes

Kashmir sits on a collision zone. The Indian Plate slams into the Eurasian Plate, constantly building pressure. This pressure is released through earthquakes, especially along weak zones called faults. The 2005 quake struck near one such fault on the southern edge of the Himalayas. These immense forces make Kashmir prone to earthquakes.

    Conclusion

Although the 4.1 magnitude earthquake in Baramulla, Jammu, and Kashmir, alarmed locals, thankfully no major damage resulted. This incident emphasizes the value of being ready and acting quickly to lessen the effects of similar natural disasters, as does the recent earthquake in Tofino, Canada. In order to maintain public safety and handle any emerging problems, authorities are nevertheless keeping an eye on both locations.
