The Indian Army would be associated with heroic soldiers in most people’s minds. But the army dogs also need to be applauded for the incredible part they play as well. Such dogs that are used for identifying explosives as well as for finding enemies are loyal and courageous.
Army Tracker Dog Meru from the 22 Army Dog Unit boarded a train to Meerut on retirement. He will spend the rest of his days at the Dogs Retirement Home at the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Center.

Transition to Retirement
These dogs must go through intensive training to perform their duties; after serving for 8-10 years, they are retired. They are then taken by their handlers or any other member of the military and are loved and cared for as they should. Sometimes special homes and NGOs are also responsible for their maintenance after their retirement.
Meru’s Final Journey
It has been a sad day for the 22 Army Dog Unit as one of their tracker dogs, Meru is retiring. He boarded a train to Meerut, to end his days in the Dogs Retirement Home at the Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) Center.
Meru is on a ride and he is comfortably seated in an air-conditioned First Class carriage. This luxury travel is due to a recent decision reached by the Ministry of Defence whereby retiring service dogs are now permitted to travel in this class with their handlers. This move helps to provide the comfort that these dogs deserve in their post-service years in service to the nation.
Public Support and Well Wishes
Many people on the internet congratulated Meru and gave him wonderful messages and wished him well for his retirement. This is the start of a well-earned, comfortable retirement for Meru who has been referred to as the ‘goodest’ boy. This kind of treatment for the retiring dogs by the Indian Army proves that they have a lot of respect and appreciation for these companions. Meru’s AC First Class journey from Meerut symbolizes an entirely new life of comfort and royal living in return for his years of service.
