In the other case, one migrant lost his life while sixty-four others were unaccounted for in the water.

According to United Nations agencies, 64 people were reported missing in the sea after a shipwreck close to the Italian southern region on Monday; however, 11 of the drowned were retrieved and transferred to a town situated in Calabria.

A wooden ship containing 10 dead people who were believed to have been migrants was also recovered, according to a tweet in X, which used to be Twitter, by the German aid organization Resqship in another shipwreck.

The first shipwreck occurred approximately 200 kilometers off Calabria; the boat had sailed from Turkey eight days prior; it was reported that the boat caught fire and capsized, according to the UN agencies, survivors included.

The distress call was made by a French boat after which the search and rescue began as stated by the Italian Coast Guard. Specifically, the migrants were traveling in a part of the maritime borders between Greece and Italy in which search and rescue operations are conducted. The UN agencies also pointed out that many of the survivors and the people unaccounted for were from Iran, Syria, and Iraq.

The Italian Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre responded quickly by alerting and redirecting two merchant ships near the rescue area. Assets from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex also assisted in this.

The remaining survivors were transported to the Calabrian region of Roccella Ionica where the survivors were landed and handed over to health care personnel. One of the migrants, the coast guard added, passed away shortly afterward.

In the second shipwreck, the boat of Resqship identified as Nadir, had 61 members from the wooden boat, which was flooded.

‘We managed to rescue 51 people, two of them are unconscious,’ the team said The other 10 individuals were found dead in the submerged lower deck of the boat,’ it noted.
