Early Life and Political Career of Advani
On November 8, 1927, he was born in Karachi, which is now in Pakistan. In 1942, he became a Swayamsevak and joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He was the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from 1986 to 1990, 1993 to 1998, and 2004 to 2005. From the party’s founding in 1980, Advani served as its president for the longest period.
Advani spent almost thirty years in Parliament, first as the Home Minister and then, from 1999 to 2004, as the Deputy Prime Minister in Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet. According to the BJP’s official website, Advani was the party’s prime ministerial candidate for the general elections that ended on May 16, 2009, as the Leader of the Opposition in a parliamentary democracy.
Legacy and Honors
Advani was formally declared as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2009 general elections by the Parliamentary Board on December 10, 2007. But after the Congress party and its supporters emerged victorious in the 2009 general elections, Advani gave way to Sushma Swaraj, who now holds the role of Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Lok Sabha.
