Our selections include a contentious remake of a seminal 1960s picture, an action movie starring a legend from the 1990s, and an excellent science fiction thriller that takes place aboard a train.
1. Snowpiercer (2014)
Bong Joon-ho is the best director when it comes to incorporating issues of social injustice and class inequality into his films. In Snowpiercer, the well-known director combined environmentalism with the aforementioned issues. In 2031, a climate change experiment gone wrong causes a second ice age, forcing mankind to dwell aboard a train that circles the planet. The wealthy live luxuriously at the front of the train, while the impoverished endure difficult, claustrophobic conditions in the rear. This divide is based on economic status.
One of the leaders of the lower class group, Curtis Everett (Chris Evans), encourages his fellow travelers to rebel and follow him to the front of the train in the hopes of making it to the engine room. The leaders of the train, particularly Minister Mason (Tilda Swinton), will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo, though. That’s okay if it means eradicating the impoverished.
2. Timecop (1994)
Jean-Claude Van Damme was a genuine A-list action star from 1988 to 1997. Van Damme wowed fans with his exceptional athleticism and martial arts prowess in Bloodsport. Van Damme played a time-traveling police officer in the dystopian action movie Timecop near the conclusion of his career. Senator Aaron McComb (Ron Silver) is in charge of the Time Enforcement Commission (TEC), which was founded by the government in 1994 to eliminate illegal behavior related to time travel.
Unknown attackers attack and kill Police Officer Max Walker’s (Van Damme) wife just after he is recruited to the TEC. Ten years later, Max—who is currently employed by the TEC—discovers a 1920s-era government plot involving McComb. Timecop was been dubbed a “low-rent Terminator” by Roger Ebert. Mr. Ebert, Timecop is more entertaining than that. It’s a fantastic B-level Terminator.
3. Planet of the Apes (2001)
Astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) crashes on the planet Ashlar in 2029 after traveling through a wormhole. Given that apes rule the globe and enslave people, this is no ordinary planet. Leo receives support from Ari (Helena Bonham Carter), a sympathetic monkey who opposes human abuse, while he is being held captive. Leo escapes and sets out to locate his downed spacecraft with the aid of other human slaves, but he will have to do so while under attack from the Gorilla Army and the evil General Thade (Tim Roth).
It’s acceptable that Planet of the Apes is not a flawless film. Despite certain script problems, Tim Burton’s remake would never match the 1968 original’s ground-breaking or impactful qualities. Still, the makeup is quite amazing, and the images are incredibly well done. There’s enough action and drama to hold your interest even in the face of one of the worst endings ever.
