The 2024 American action thriller Monkey Man is directed by Dev Patel. He also co-wrote the screenplay with John Collee and Paul Angunawela. Additionally, Patel co-produced and stars in the film alongside Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, and Makarand Deshpande. This marks Patel’s first feature film as a director.

On March 11, 2024, Monkey Man made its international premiere at South by Southwest. Universal Pictures plans to release the film in the US on April 5, 2024.
Premise
An unnamed young man named Kid embarks on a quest to find a gang of dishonest leaders who killed his mother Neela. But Kid’s quest for vengeance quickly transforms him into the savior of the helpless and destitute, who are tortured by the despicable overlords.

Production
It was announced on October 29, 2018, that Dev Patel would direct the action thriller Monkey Man as his directorial debut. Regarding his involvement in the movie, Patel said, “I believe that the action genre has occasionally been misused by the establishment. I wanted to infuse it with a genuine spirit, anguish, and suffering. And I wanted to add a tiny bit of culture to it.”
The coronavirus outbreak caused delays and even the cancellation of the film, which was originally scheduled to begin location shooting in India in early 2020. Patel then made the decision to film the movie on a little Indonesian island.
On March 12, 2021, the production announced that the movie, dubbed “John Wick in Mumbai,” had wrapped up. Netflix acquired global distribution rights for the film. Patel injured his hand during the first action sequence filming, and COVID-19 safety procedures prevented the production team from getting medical attention right away. Eventually, he traveled to Jakarta where he obtained medical care in secret.
At some point after watching the movie, Jordan Peele decided it was better suited for a theatrical run and purchased it from Netflix under his Monkeypaw Productions label. Monkeypaw Productions, which has a distribution agreement with Universal Pictures, acquired the film. Jed Kurzel, a new composer, replaced the original composer, Volker Bertelmann, and wrote a new soundtrack.
