    ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ trailer: Diljit Dosanjh becomes the ‘Elvis Presley of Punjab’

    Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the biopic of the late Punjabi folk singer, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila,’ is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on April 12th.

    In Mumbai on Thursday, the trailer for Imtiaz Ali’s latest musical, “Amar Singh Chamkila” unveiled. The film is set in Punjab during the tumultuous 1980s featuring Diljit Dosanjh portraying the iconic folk singer, Amar Singh Chamkila. Parineeti Chopra takes on the role of Chamkila’s wife and musical collaborator, Amarjot.

    Ali’s film chronicles the ascent of Chamkila, often hailed as the ‘Elvis Presley of Punjab’. He navigates through achievements and skepticism, adulation, and notoriety. Starting as a modest mill worker, he ascends to become the voice of Punjab’s populace. He emerged as the top-selling recording artist in the state. His fans proclaim, “While other artists are esteemed, you belong uniquely to us.”

    Imtiaz Ali described the film as a love story between Chamkila and his music, highlighting the singer’s courage despite threats on his life.

    Chamkila’s rise occurs amidst Punjab’s separatist movement, depicted subtly in the trailer. We see his encounters with armed men while emphasizing his romantic relationship with Amarjot. Additionally, the trailer highlights the prominence of music, including Chamkila’s original songs and a new soundtrack by A.R. Rahman.

    Dosanjh, a celebrated pop star in India, gained global attention for his extravagant performance at Coachella. His collaboration with Sia on a hit single also got media attention. While continuing his acting career part-time, Dosanjh has earned praise for his roles in movies like “Udta Punjab,” “Punjab 1984,” and the Netflix film “Jogi.”
