Heightened Tensions: Possible Iran-Hezbollah Attack on Israel Looms

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warns G7 of a potential Iran-Hezbollah attack on Israel, while Israel considers a preemptive strike. Rising tensions prompt evacuations.

Delhi, New: According to Axios, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has alerted his G7 counterparts to the possibility that Iran and Hezbollah may launch an attack against Israel as early as Monday.

Blinken Alerts G7 to Potential Attack

However, the Times of Israel, a prominent daily in Israel, revealed that the government led by Benjamin Netanyahu may approve a preemptive strike on Iran to avert an attack on Israeli territory. The article claims that IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and leaders of Israel’s top intelligence organizations, Mossad and Shin Bet, David Barnea and Ronen Bar, participated in a meeting called by Netanyahu.

Iran supported the creation of Hezbollah in the early 1980s, and it stands in for Iran’s first Middle East proxy. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which provides funding and armaments to Hezbollah, is a group that predominantly recruits Shiite Muslims in Lebanon and holds similar views to Tehran.

    Israel’s Preemptive Attack Consideration

Iran declared on Saturday that Hezbollah will intensify its assaults into Israeli territory, possibly aiming for targets other than military outposts. Following Israel’s recent death of Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander for Hezbollah, tensions have quickly escalated. Shukr and five civilians were killed on July 30 when Israel attacked a heavily populated residential area in south Beirut.

    Rising Tensions and Recent Events

The death of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, in Tehran, has further exacerbated the situation. Although Israeli authorities have not confirmed the move, it is believed to have been orchestrated by them.

Fears have increased sharply as months of border skirmishes run the potential of turning into a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah. The two enemies last fought a bloody battle in the summer of 2006, during which Israel bombed Beirut, the country’s sole passenger airport.

    Diplomatic Efforts and Evacuations

Several embassies, including India’s, have advised their residents to leave Lebanon while commercial flights are still operating because of the severity of the current situation. Ever since its Palestinian affiliate Hamas launched an attack on Israel on October 7, which set off the present conflict in Gaza, Hezbollah, and Israeli forces have been engaged in almost daily gunfire, with the latter group aiming at military sites.

According to the article, Antony Blinken coordinated diplomatic attempts to defuse the situation by calling a conference call with the G7 foreign ministers in response to these developments.
