U. S & Canada Deploy Naval Assets as Russian Navy Anchors in Cuba

Amid rising tensions in Havana harbor, Russian naval demonstrations with the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and Kazan submarine evoke Cold War-like concerns.

Russian Navy: These conveniences come after the Russian navy demonstrations earlier this week in which it was accompanied by the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and the nuclear-powered submarine the Kazan.

Hostilities are heating up this week with Havana harbor being the epicenter of the rising naval power. In early of Friday, a patrol vessel of the Canadian navy, HMCS Margaret Brooke entered the harbor as the USS Helena, a fast attack submarine of the United States had previously tied at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. This came after Russia’s Admiral Gorshkov frigate and the nuclear-powered submarine Kazan docked in an integrated exercise at the Ports of Valletta this week.

The presence of numerous armed vessels with distinct flags and national symbols during the exercise has raised concerns over a new round of Cold War-like competition. However, the departments close to the United States and the Cuban officials denied any concern in regard to the Russian navy warships. The Russian government has sought to explain its naval deployment in Cuba as part of a usual sailing to an associate country.

Before their arrival in Havana on Wednesday, the Russian defense ministry said that the Admiral Gorshkov frigate and the Kazan submarine maritime drills in the accuracy of missile launches in the Atlantic Ocean. The miscalculations accentuated by the maneuver unveil the continued military preparedness of Russian navy as well as strategic partnerships in the area.

On the other hand, the Canadian Joint Operations Command was happy to call the visit of HMCS Margaret Brooke in Havana to indicate a continuing partnership between Canada and Cuba. The already growing naval presence in the region enhances the significance of the port visit in demonstrating Canada’s desire to promote diplomacy and cooperation in international relations even during war.

Cuba showed a far different attitude to the arrival of the U. S. submarine though it was visiting for humanitarian reasons only. The Cuban Foreign Ministry was not happy pointing to the fact that an invite usually launches naval visits and Cuba never invited the US Navy! Minister for Foreign Affairs, Carlos Fernández de Cossío expressed his apprehension and said, ‘Naval visits to a country are usually an invitation issue and this was not true, ‘Clearly, we are not happy with the presence in our territory and? a submarine come from a power that has an official and practical program hostile against Cuban.
