Ghaziabad by-election 2024: Ten assembly constituencies, including the Ghaziabad assembly seat, are scheduled for by-elections. Following Atul Garg’s election as BJP MLA from this constituency, the seat is now vacant. This seat was the subject of a by-election twenty years ago. The strange thing is that the Samajwadi Party candidate won the by-election, even though the incumbent MLA from this area had already won the election and became an MP. That was the only occasion on which the cycle was run on this seat prior to 2004, and the SP has not won here since.
The BJP has controlled the Ghaziabad assembly seat since 2017
Here, Atul Garg, a BJP candidate, prevailed in the assembly elections of 2017 and 2022. The election is predicted to be thrilling as the BJP will strive to win three straight while the SP-BSP will attempt to overturn the results of the by-election.
The BJP’s lead in the vote shrunk
Atul Garg won this assembly seat by about one lakh votes in the 2022 assembly elections; but, in the Lok Sabha elections, Atul Garg was only able to gain an advantage of 63,256 votes, meaning that the margin of victory has shrunk. There were almost 2 lakh 27 thousand votes cast in total here. In which Dolly Sharma of the Congress received roughly 74 thousand votes, while Atul Garg received one lakh 37 thousand. Even though it is still considered one of the BJP’s safe seats, the by-election is expected to feature an intriguing contest due to the alliance between the SP and the Congress.
Political equations for the seat
Since 1991, the BJP has primarily held the Ghaziabad assembly seat. Prakash Goyal was elected as a Congress MLA here in 2002, and Surendra Kumar Munni, the SP candidate, was victorious in 2004. Voters from the Vaishya and SC communities are crucial in the Ghaziabad assembly seat. As a result, most people place bets on them.
In a close race in 2004, SP prevailed
The Samajwadi Party had won the 2004 by-election for this seat. Surendra Kumar Munni, the candidate from the SP, defeated the Congress candidate with almost 12,000 votes. About sixty-four thousand votes went to the Congress candidate, fifty-two thousand to the BJP candidate Sunita Dayal, forty-four thousand to the BSP’s Munish Verma, and forty-two thousand to the SP candidate.
