According to US media, Joe Biden is considering supporting several changes to the US Supreme Court, including removing lifetime seats. The Democratic president would make a significant U-turn if he supported these proposals. It happened following a string of rulings by the Supreme Court that eliminated the federal right to an abortion and granted protection from prosecution for “official acts” committed by President Donald Trump.

Proposed Changes: Term Limits and Ethics Code
The US partner of the BBC, CBS News, said that Mr. Biden was looking into strengthening the court’s ethics code and putting term restrictions on judges now appointed for life. It would be challenging to pass amendments in a divided Congress, though. A source with knowledge of the conversation told CBS News that Mr. Biden informed Democrats in the Congressional Progressive Caucus over the weekend that he was working with experts on the improvements and that they would be publicized soon.
When questioned regarding the suggested adjustments or the potential date of an announcement, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to provide further details. Trump denounced what he described as an “illegal and unConstitutional attack on our SACRED… Supreme Court” in a post on Truth Social. For a long time, Mr. Biden has rejected his party’s court reform demands. After his predecessor, Donald Trump nominated three right-wing justices to create a 6-3 conservative majority, some Democrats claimed that something needed to change.
Political Challenges and Congressional Divide
Concerns over Justice Clarence Thomas’s acceptance of lavish travel from a billionaire Republican donor and his wife’s endorsement of voiding the 2020 presidential election following Trump’s defeat have also raised ethical concerns regarding the high court.
Early in his presidency, Mr. Biden established a commission to make recommendations. The advice was never put into practice. It would be extremely difficult for Democrats to pass any legislation in the split Senate and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.
This term’s high court verdicts demonstrated the dramatic political shift, with the conservative majority rendering several high-profile decisions affecting the environment, gun control, abortion rights, and Trump’s criminal prosecutions. The Supreme Court also rejected Mr. Biden’s proposal to erase student loans, which would have relieved Americans of billions of dollars worth of debt. The court decided that Trump and other presidents enjoy broad, but not absolute, immunity from criminal prosecution for the things they do while in office on the final day of view
Impact of Recent Supreme Court Rulings
Sentencing in one of the four criminal charges against Trump has been postponed, and one has been dismissed altogether. In addition to the changes, Mr. Biden is considering supporting a constitutional amendment that would do away with the court’s very broad immunity. If confirmed, Mr. Biden’s proposed strategy would at least provide him with a fresh campaign platform in the lead-up to the election in November.
On the campaign trail, the president frequently references the decisions of the Supreme Court. In an interview with BET on Tuesday, he brought up the Supreme Court and its 2022 decision to reverse Roe v. Wade, which ended the right to an abortion. Mr. Biden pointed out that if Trump wins, he might be able to name one or more additional justices. “Just imagine if he has two more appointments,” Biden stated.
