Early on Monday morning, heavy rain battered Mumbai and its suburbs, producing massive waterlogging on important roadways and low-lying regions, severely impairing the daily lives of city dwellers and creating severe traffic jams around the city. According to municipal officials, the city received almost 300 mm of rain in six hours, from 1 am to 7 am, at different locations.

Considerable water accumulation was observed in several places, including Vile Parle, Dadar, Kurla, Bhandup, Andheri, and King’s Circle. In many areas of India’s financial capital, transportation came to a complete stop as a result of the unceasing rain overwhelming storm drains. In several places, people were wading through knee-deep water while vehicles were observed drifting in the water.

Over 300 millimeters of rain fell in six hours, from midnight yesterday to seven a.m. today, at various locations. Suburban train services have also been affected by the heavy rains, and certain low-lying districts have experienced waterlogging,” the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated.

    Major Areas Affected by Waterlogging

Schools closed: Under the jurisdiction of the civic body, the BMC declared a half-day holiday for all public, private, and college institutions. Later on, the decision regarding the afternoon class session will be made public. The BEST bus services and suburban train services were also affected by the heavy rain. According to officials, several BEST buses were rerouted off their usual routes.

Schools Closed and Train Cancellations Announced

Train cancellations: MMR-CSMT (12110), Pune-CSMT (11010), Pune-CSMT Deccan (12124), Pune-CSMT Deccan (11007), and CSMT-Pune Intercity Express (12127) trains have all been canceled by the Central Railway. Additionally, local rail services were temporarily suspended until being restored once the water on the tracks subsided.

The Central Railway’s suburban services were impacted by the intense downpour. There are disruptions to train services at Sion and in the Bhandup and Nahur stations. Trains were halted for over an hour because rainwater was over the tracks. Trains are now running again as the water has somewhat receded, although services are still impacted,” a senior official stated at 8 a.m.

Airlines Issue Advisory and Traffic Congestion Reported

Airlines issue advisory: Vistara recommended travelers schedule their travel to the airport appropriately due to the unfavorable weather in Delhi. “Due to the weather, there will likely be heavy traffic congestion and sluggish vehicle movement on the route to Mumbai Airport today.

Traffic congestion around the city: On Monday morning at rush hour, there was a lot of traffic on the city’s major highways and roads that were not underwater. Images taken from the Western Expressway revealed extended sections of traffic having difficulty navigating.

    CIVIC BODY’S “STAY HOME” ADVICE

Rain to continue: For the next few hours, the city is anticipated to see a lot of rain. Mumbai is anticipated to have a “generally cloudy sky with moderate to heavy rain in the city and its suburbs,” according to the most recent India Materialological Department forecast, which was released on Monday morning. The BMC urged city dwellers to exercise caution and leave their homes as soon as needed.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mumbai is expected to see severe to extremely heavy rains today. All of the BMC’s equipment is out in the field due to the persistent rains. Mumbai residents are kindly asked not to accept any rumors. Additionally, to only leave the house when required. The civic body stated, “In the event of an emergency, dial 1916 for prompt assistance.”

High tide predicted: Due to the current weather conditions, the weather bureau also issued a warning, stating that the city will experience a high tide of 4.2 meters at approximately 2 pm today.
