The Delhi Police applied late Saturday night for a remand order to keep Bibhav Kumar, an aide of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in custody for seven days. It was also mentioned that the alleged attack on Swati Maliwal, the AAP’s Rajya Sabha member, was a “serious case” where the “brutal assault” could have even been fatal.
Serious Allegations and Evasive Responses
Metropolitan Magistrate Gaurav Goyal, who ordered the five-day detention of Kumar by the police, found out that Kumar was reluctant to cooperate or give meaningful responses. ”This is a very serious offense where the MP, a public figure gets brutally assaulted to the point that he could have died,” said the remand paper signed by Anjitha Chepyala, North District Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police. Despite the detailed questions asked by him, Kumar was uncooperative.
Corroborating Evidence and Missing DVR Footage
Maliwal’s medical corroborated her testimony. As per her allegations, Kumar threatened and abused her besides an assault which included dragging, banging of her head on the center table, and brutality. Moreover, the plea underscores that the most significant evidence is the DVR video that the police are yet to receive.
When an employee of the CM’s residence was requested to show access to the DVR and CCTV cameras, he admitted that he did not have such access but provided a video from the dining hall, which was later found to have been blank at the time of the alleged incident. This brought into question the possibility of altering electronic evidence that could be used as evidence.
Potential for Tampering and Influence
The remand application was to the effect that Kumar having a presence in SOC might have tampered with indispensable evidence. His prominent place in a position of power and a long time in office will enable him to threaten witnesses. Despite of being dismissed as the CM’s personal secretary in April 2024, the same saga continued. Kumar needed to be clarified about his role and authority as he was still working in CM’s residence.
